Field Notes

Four books worth reading before you hire anyone

The reading list we hand to clients: de Becker on intuition and protective detail work, Bazzell on privacy, and Van Horne on reading behavior.

Good security starts with how you think, and a handful of books teach that better than any product ever will. These four are the ones we hand to clients, to students in our training sessions, and to anyone who wants to understand this field before spending money on it.

The Gift of Fear, by Gavin de Becker

The book we recommend first, to everyone. De Becker’s argument is simple: your intuition is a survival system that processes danger signals faster than your conscious mind, and most victims of violence saw warning signs they talked themselves out of. The book teaches you to take those signals seriously without living in fear. If you read only one book on this list, read this one.

Just 2 Seconds, by Gavin de Becker

A study of attacks on public figures, built from hundreds of real incidents. The title is the thesis: most attacks unfold in about two seconds, so protection is about positioning, awareness, and preparation before anything happens, not reaction speed afterward. Essential if you are considering executive protection, and clarifying about what professional protection actually involves.

Extreme Privacy, by Michael Bazzell

The practical manual for reducing your digital and physical footprint. Bazzell spent a career finding people; this book is written from the other side, on how not to be found. Not everyone needs the full program, but everyone benefits from understanding how exposed their address, phone number, and daily patterns already are, and what removing that exposure takes.

Left of Bang, by Patrick Van Horne and Jason Riley

Developed from the Marine Corps’ combat profiling program, this book teaches you to read baselines and anomalies: what normal looks like in an environment, and how to notice when something departs from it. “Left of bang” means acting before an event, not after. It is the most teachable framework we know for situational awareness.

We have no affiliation with any of these authors or publishers; we recommend the books because they hold up. If what you read raises questions about your own situation, we are happy to talk it through.
